Museum Beelden aan Zee
Assignement details & background information
Museum Beelden aan Zee in Scheveningen ("Sculptures by the Sea"), a vibrant museum for sculpture enthusiasts, was planning the exhibition of the iconic sculptor Henry Moore and looking for the following:
- A very large plinth to present the skull of an elephant
- A matching acrylic display case
- Various plinths and display cases in different colours matching the work of Henry Moore
The sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986) is known for his reclining female figures, made of bronze, wood or stone. His masterpieces have made him world-famous, one of the most important sculptors and English artists of the 20th century. Museum Beelden aan Zee, in collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, made a selection from his oeuvre for an impressive exhibition in their museum.
Museum Beelden aan Zee turned to Google for finding a suitable presentation solution that would do the famous sculptures justice. That's how they found Solits and invited us for a site visit to discuss their plans and wishes for this exhibition. What was the biggest challenge? Creating a gigantic plinth of 12m long to present the skull of an elephant, including a matching acrylic display box, two meters high.
Execution
We wouldn't be Solits if we didn't tackle this challenge with enthusiasm. With our extensive experience in making large plinths and display cases, such challenges have truly become a passion of ours. Based on the wishes of Beelden aan Zee, we immediately started working on the design: a twelve-meter-long plinth and a display case to match, consisting of six separate sections, two meters long each. The sections were supposed to be connected together on location in order to form a large display case, but they could also be used separately. The end result was very multifunctional and versatile, a showcase that could also be used for future exhibitions.
In addition to this impressive plinth with a display case, we were given the opportunity to make a large number of other plinths and display cases for the Henry Moore exhibition. Together with a colour expert, we selected four beautiful colours that perfectly matched Henry Moore’s artwork. We used those colours for the plinths, bringing every detail of the artwork into its own.
The result was impressive! We are very pleased to have become this museum’s go-to supplier for plinths and display cases, partly thanks to our sustainable display case design. Sustainability is an important aspect for more and more customers. Solits thinks along with them, and has been striving at providing sustainable solutions built with sustainable materials for years, now also with an eye to future exhibitions at the Museum Beelden aan Zee.
