Moco Museum Amsterdam
Assignment details:
- The plinth is to be placed outside, therefore there is a possibility of condensation (by means of temperature fluctuations) inside the display case
- Moisture / water must not get into the display case
- The display case must be easy to clean
Execution:
Two options for the plinth material were originally offered to the customer: concrete plywood and natural stone. Natural stone is the material which is commonly used for the outside due to it durability, but it is quite expensive. The museum has chosen for a less expensive option with the idea that a natural stone plinth will have to be purchased in a few years. We made the plinth out of concrete plywood with internal reinforcement. Seams of the plinth were painted black, to complete the black look. The display case was designed like a box with a removable lid, which falls over the sides, so that no moisture can get into the display. The 4 sides were glued together in miter, the strongest gluing available. There is also a rubber strip on the top and the bottom of the sides, protecting the case against the moisture. This display case was very heavy, so we made it from parts, which made cleaning a lot easier.
