What material to choose for your plinth?

- Categories : new

Previously we wrote a blog about: What size plinths should i choose?

In this blog we will try to answer the question:

Which materials are suitable?

A base of granite, a plinth of natural Oakwood, a white pedestal, a column for art, two pillars for decorative plant pots or an exhibition display for a product launch. We come around these applications on a daily basis. But how do you decide what material is best suitable for you?

On a daily basis, we advise and inform our clients about this. And we will advise according to the following points:

1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

2. What will be displayed on top of the plinths?

3. In what kind of interior design will the plinth be placed

4. Will the plinths move about a lot?

1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

You will have your own preference for certain materials. If you like robust materials than a natural wood mooring post plinth or a rugged Oakwood pedestal will be better suited for you than glass or granite.

Do you have a classical interior design? Than a pedestal made from natural stone, such as granite or Belgian Bluestone or a base made from oak veneer will be suitable.

Clients who enjoy new styles or who like a modern design often buy plinths made from a high gloss material.

You may be able to reach a decision by unchecking the material that you may not like.

2. What will be displayed on top of the plinths?

The product in the spotlights

In most cases you will have something to display on top of the plinth. For instance:

A product, floral display or the art object will have to be displayed to their optimum. A contrast between the object and the plinth will benefit the object. When you are displaying a black art object than this will be more noticeable when displayed on top of a wooden, (natural stone) grey or white plinth instead of a black plinth.

So, bronze sculptures are very beautiful of Belgian Bluestonegranite or a mature mooring post plinth.

How much weight can you put on top of a plinth?

We very often get asked this question. You certainly have to consider the weight that can be put on top of a plinth. For plinths made from acrylic (Perspex) and glass we can guarantee a weight bearing capacity of 25Kg. The weight capacity of our cardboard plinth is remarkably high: on top of our cardboard plinth you can out about 75Kg, thanks to the internal cross construction. On top of our exhibition plinths made from MDF, such as our black or whitehigh gloss or concrete look display plinths you can put items of 100Kg. On our natural solid Oakwood and mooring post plinths you can put even heavier items.

We can increase the weigh bearing capacity of various materials by adding bespoke strengthening.

3. In what kind of interior design will the plinth be placed

What type of material should I use for my interior design

The most crucial factor will be the interior design of the space, but as important is the exact place where the display pedestal will be placed.

I will explain this with an example from my own home.

I really think our mooring post is beautiful; rugged, robust and characterful and it certainly is a product with its own story. I love beautiful natural materials, so when designing the interior space of my home I opted for oak wood floors and dark wood cupboards. However, a mooting post plinth next to these cupboards and on top of this floor didn’t look right. A silk white pedestal gave this corner of the house the calmness that it needed. Fortunately, the same rugged mooring post fitted beautifully right next to our sofa, against a white wall.

4. Will the plinths move about a lot?

Do you require your pedestals as display plinths for a trade exhibition or trade fair? It may be advisable to consider the weight of plinths. During the build up of a trade expo you are often located far away in a large exhibition centre and with a lot of other items required for the fair you don’t want to lug around a really heavy solid Oakwood plinth.

For trade exhibitions and trade fairs we often use MDF or cardboard plinths. Our cardboard plinths are not just very lightweight, but also very easily foldable. Our popular Cardboard plinth are available in white, wood & concrete look or fully printed with your design, brand or logo.
