“OCEANISTA”, Maritime Museum of Denmark
Assignment details & background information
One of the museum’s largest exhibition to date “OCEANISTA – The sea & fashion through 100 years” was about the ocean, the ships and the good craftsmanship.
“Denmark’s National Maritime Museum must not only tell stories about ships and cargo, but also about the imprint that shipping puts on our entire culture and identity. Most Danes have a striped blouse in the wardrobe or an old family photo of a boy in sailor clothes” said Ulla Tofte, director of the Museum.
The exhibition featured a selection of young designers as well as a large number of the biggest names on the international fashion scene in a colorful and magical underwater landscape of coral, sound and light. It tried to re-shift the attention from just fashion to the ocean as an energetic, strong and powerful inspiration, almost an obsession for designers throughout the decades, hence the word "Oceanista".
The exhibition was curated by The Maritime Museum of Denmark in collaboration with fashion researcher Maria Mackinney-Valentin, and the exhibition scenography was created by award-winning scenographer Julian Juhlin.
The concept of the exhibition was unique, and it required tailor-made approach to presentation solutions. Every single plinth and display case we made for “Oceanista” was a bespoke one.
